Secular State

Nowadays, most countries declare themselves as secular, but does everybody knows the truly meaning of this term? In Brazil, given the large number of holidays of the Catholic Church, many people question if the Brazilian State is really secular. Along with this, on the country’s political crisis and various controversies raised by the famous “evangelical bench” discussions are encouraged about the attempt of these to create a Christian government.

Well: everything has started officially in the nineteenth century, with the so-called French secularism, a principle that preaches the separation of church and state. It was later created a political system based on this principle – secularity.

It is not hard to see  the purpose of this system, mainly  when we relate this to the famous phrase of the French Revolution “Liberté, égalité, fraternité”, which influenced also famous (Obviously not as famous as their matriarch) Inconfidência Mineira, whose motto: freedom, equality, fraternity influenced the phrase emblazoned on the flag of the state of Minas Gerais.

In Brazil, secularism was marked by the 1988 Constitution, Art. 5, inc. SAW

1988 Federal Constitution

We, representatives of the Brazilian people, gathered in the National Constituent Assembly to institute a Democratic State, to ensure the exercise of social and individual rights, liberty, security, well-being, development, equality and justice as values supreme of a fraternal, pluralistic and unprejudiced, based on social harmony and committed, in internal and international, to the peaceful settlement of disputes, promulgate, under the protection of God, this CONSTITUTION OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF BRAZIL.

Art. 5 All are equal before the law, without distinction of any kind, guaranteeing to Brazilians and foreigners residing in the country the inviolable right to life, liberty, equality, security and property, as follows:

VI – and inviolable freedom of conscience and religion, and guaranteed the free exercise of religious cults and guaranteeing, in the form of law, the protection of places of worship and their rites;

In short, the idea of secularism was to promote the separation of state and church, as during the Middle Ages, this experience ended tragically. However, at any time he says that society should not have a religion, on the contrary, claims that individuals are free to express their beliefs, provided there is no involvement with the government. If the State makes such a ban, then, we are facing an atheist state, not secular, as happened during the socialist regime in the former Soviet Union

Some may say, “Oh, most Christians do not understand this and want to impose their beliefs.”

Well, at any time the Christian should impose their beliefs on government. A simple way of supporting my speech is recorded in Matthew 22:

16 They sent their disciples to him along with the Herodians. “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you are a man of integrity and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are. 17 Tell us then, what is your opinion? Is it right to pay the imperial tax[a] to Caesar or not?”

18 But Jesus, knowing their evil intent, said, “You hypocrites, why are you trying to trap me? 19 Show me the coin used for paying the tax.” They brought him a denarius, 20 and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

21 “Caesar’s,” they replied.

Then he said to them, “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”

Matthew 22: 16-21

Translation: One day Herodians asked Jesus if they should pay taxes, and he wisely replied: give men what men’s deserve and to God what God deserves. That is, the money was a human creation in its need to produce and exchange their labor power for a product produced by the labor of others, since no one alone is self-sufficient, so it must be solved among men. He never said that the Roman Emperor should be deposed and one of his disciples should take the throne or that Caesar should become and rule the empire according to a manual of Christian beliefs. He was already being secular, in the style God is God and Caesar is Caesar, there is no dispute between them because they different powers!!

I am saying that the rulers can not be Christians? ALSO NO, because the very concept of secularism says that each can have their belief, how could I say the opposite?

What happens today, referring especially to Brazil, is that becomes “fashion” say that someone is Christian. Some people just started do declare this to increase the “public election” and the worst is that there is an “electoral corral” Christian.

Question: “Oh, so you’re saying that Christians are ignorant and do not know how to vote?”

Unfortunately many people delude themselves in time to vote and that is why we experience the horrifying spectacle in Brasilia. People vote deluded into false promises or vote without even knowing who they are voting.

More important than labels, it is the acts. If the intention is to say that you are Christian because it gives fame, please do not do it. If the intention is to say that you are atheists because Christians are a bunch of ignorant, also do not do it. The name of this page is Beliverwood for some purpose.

We should all act according to what we truly believe, not because of something we have heard.

Each of us has a huge responsibility to our fellow men. For Christian, it is more important their position in the circumstances than labels. We do not need a bench that self-declare as evangelical – WE NEED PEOPLE WHO ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT HELP PEOPLE THAN TO SAY THAT THEY ARE HELPING POOR PEOPLE. This is what really matter to who are voting.

And for who is not a Christian, do not be just badmouthing all Christians because of poor isolated examples. For example, do you think the Hitler’s mother was a bad person? The Stalin’s mother? Just as we can not judge the mother for the acts of their children, we can not judge the Christ and his teachings by the bad behavior of their children, Furthermore, we can not judge his brothers because, what shall we say about the episode experienced by Brazilians – the famous PC Faria scandal, denounced by none other than the brother of one of the accused themselves?

Anyway, I hope this article has not been dull nor disrespectful to anyone.
